Official handover in Namibia: Desalination plants generate drinking water

The Namibian Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF) has now been taking over the desalination plants in the Omusati region which were implemented within the framework of the German-Namibian research project CuveWaters. Joint excursion of German and Namibian students to CuveWaters rain- and floodwater harvesting pilot plants

On 6th and 7th of October 2013 a group of more than 20 students from Kaiserslautern University of Technology (Germany) and University of Namibia, Ongwediva Engineering Campus visited the CuveWaters rainwater harvesting pilot plants in Epyeshona as well as the floodwater harvesting pilot plant in Iipopo. Wastewater as a resource: Innovative sanitation concept for Namibia

Water is a scarce commodity in Namibia. The natural resource is coming under increasing pressure due to climate change, a rapidly growing population and the exodus from rural areas. The project team of CuveWaters, led by ISOE – the Institute for Social-Ecological Research, has succeeded in turning wastewater into a resource in this most arid region of the world, so that processed wastewater from sanitary facilities can be used for agricultural purposes. Another RWH Green Village constructed in Oshikoto region

In August and September 2013 another RWH Green Village in Oshikoto region was constructed. Together with the CuveWaters Green Villages in Epyeshona and Iipopo (both Oshana region) and the Green Village in Onamishu (Oshikoto region) the new plant is now the fourth of its kind in Namibia. Secured funding until 2015

Good news: the application for CuveWaters Phase III has been successful. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research will fund CuveWaters for another two years, commencing on 1st of October 2013 until 30th September 2015. The central goal of CuveWaters’ Phase III is the takeover of the plants by relevant Namibian partners, as well as empowering these partners to operate the plants autonomously over the long term.
