BMBF delegation visits CuveWaters pilot projects in Namibia

From June 24th to 29th a delegation of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) visited the Cuvelai region in northern Namibia to get a first hand look at the CuveWaters pilot projects. Since 2006, a team led by ISOE has been implementing an Integrated Water Resource Management concept. With the aim of using water more sustainably, different water sources are being developed with the help of various technologies and used for diverse purposes.

Launch of the new CuveWaters website

Starting from today, the CuveWaters project has a new website. Now it’s much faster and simpler to find content that interests you. In addition, we have added a Google Maps function where you can see the different project sites, information and pictures. Our picture galleries have also grown considerably. They will give you an impression of the conditions on site and of the progress and success of our work. Subsurface water storage facility opens in Namibia

A pilot plant for „Subsurface Water Storage“ in Iipopo/Namibia was officially opened on March 9th 2012. The technology is part of the CuveWaters project, which is being coordinated by ISOE. The project team is using it to test a technology that allows flood water to be stored under the ground and be retrieved and used, at high quality, during dry periods. The collected water is primarily for growing fruit and vegetables so that the people living in the village can have a balanced diet. Visit the newly constructed rainwater harvesting tank

In February 2011 Isaac Kariuki, the rainwater harvesting expert from Kenya came back to Epyeshona village. His mission was to improve the vegetable gardens in Epyeshona and to construct another rainwater harvesting tank for the primary school in Okatana. The tank will provide the school children in Okatana with 30.000 litres of rainwater each year for their school garden. All these works, such as brick laying and installation of drip irrigation are done together with the team from Epyeshona.

Community Health Clubs kick off in Namibia

Within the CuveWaters project, 28 participants were trained to become multipliers for „Community Health Clubs“ from February 27th till March 2nd 2012. ISOE implemented the session together with the organisation ‚Africa AHEAD‘, which had developed the training approach. Community Health Clubs work together with the local population to avoid health risks over the long term. Club members discuss different topics in weekly meetings, from hygienic food storage to the use of sanitary facilities.
