Global Handwashing Day 2015: more and more people are using the CuveWaters washhouses in Namibia
15 October is Global Handwashing Day. By proclaiming this day, the World Health Organization WHO wants to draw attention to the vital role played by handwashing in the global struggle against infectious diseases. However, the setting up of hygiene measures is by no means a self-evident option in all regions of the world, some of which have only scant access to sanitation facilities. In northern Namibia, washhouses and sanitation installations were established as part of the CuveWaters research and development project and are seeing ever greater use from year to year.

Rain- and Floodwater Harvesting Toolkit is online now
The RFWH Toolkit supports participatory planning and realisation of rain- and floodwater harvesting infrastructures, including gardening. Developed by a cooperation of scientific and practice partners from Germany, Namibia and Kenya during the pilot and implementation phases of the CuveWaters project, the toolkit was applied and approved in several workshops in Namibia. Since its introduction, it has become very popular because of the graphic description and the step-by-step construction manuals.

Using Water Resources in Arid Regions: Roundtable on CuveWaters Technologies
In the project CuveWaters, a Namibian-German team of researchers has developed technologies for a decentral and sustainable water supply under the lead of ISOE – Institute for Social-Ecological Research. The solutions for rain and floodwater harvesting, desalination and energy-efficient sanitary facilities were tested on pilot sites in northern Namibia and can be suitable for many other arid regions. On September 15, 2015 two experts from the project will introduce these technologies to planners from southern Africa at a roundtable in Windhoek.

CuveWaters Rain and Floodwater Harvesting at the Ongwediva Trade Fair 2015
The annually Ongwediva Trade Fair is the largest and most important Fair in central-northern Namibia and is taking place from 21st of August until 30th of August 2015 on the Ongwediva showgrounds. The CuveWaters technologies of rain- and floodwater harvesting are presented at the Fair in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF). At the Cuvewaters stand factsheets of the technologies can be obtained, the RFWH technology toolkit can be seen and project movies are shown.

Off to new horizons …
We are happy to announce that Air Namibia shows the CuveWaters short films as part of its inflight entertainment program. Desalination, Rain- and Floodwater harvesting (RFWH) as well as Sanitation and water reuse will be introduced to the passengers during the months of July and August as short programs.[more]
